Trick Training at Dogs on Cue

Based upon tricks found in 101 Dog Tricks, the #1 selling dog book by Kyra Sundance, Dogs on Cue’s trick training focuses on safety first.  Taking into consideration your dog’s age, health, breed and personality, owners work with a Dogs on Cue trainer to select the most appropriate tricks for your dog.  The prerequisite to beginning trick training is completion of one of the Dogs on Cue Obedience programs. Dogs that have completed this requirement will be able to demonstrate reliable, off lead obedience skills. In some cases, Dogs on Cue will accept dogs that have completed their obedience else where as long as they can demonstrate the necessary skill set to move into the Trick Training program.

You and your dog will have fun learning together as you strive to achieve each of 4 trick dog titles:  Novice Trick Dog (NTD), Intermediate Trick Dog (ITD), Advanced Trick Dog (ATD) and Elite Trick Dog (ETD).

Novice Trick Dog (NTD)

To earn your NTD, dogs and owners must successfully demonstrate 15 tricks to a Dogs on Cue trainer.  Each of the 101 optional tricks is assigned a skill level ranking. When working toward the NTD, an advanced or expert trick may count as two tricks.  NTD training is comprised of 4 private lessons and is also available as a group class. Examples of NTD tricks are:

  • Crawl
  • Take a bow
  • Center (Peek-a-boo)
  • Speak
  • Shake

Intermediate Trick Dog (ITD)

To earn an ITD an NTD must first be awarded.  Then, performing 15 intermediate or higher skill level tricks must be witnessed by your Dogs on Cue trainer.  Advanced or expert tricks may count as two tricks.   ITD is available in 6 private lessons or as a group class.  Examples of ITD tricks are:

  • Wave good-bye
  • Roll over
  • Sit pretty (Beg)
  • Jump into my arms
  • Leg weave

Advanced Trick Dog (ATD)

An ATD title requires the attainment of the ITD title, plus the demonstration of 5 advanced or higher skill level tricks.  ATD is offered as a group class.  Examples of ATD tricks are:

  • Climb a ladder
  • Say your prayers
  • Play dead
  • Cover your eyes
  • Turn off the light

Expert Trick Dog (ETD)

The ETD title is earned by completing the ATD title, in addition to demonstrating 5 expert level tricks.   ETD is offered as a group class.  Examples of ETD tricks are:

  • Jump rope
  • Shell game
  • Push a shopping cart
  • Track a person’s scent trail
  • Bring me a beer from the fridge

At each level, Dogs on Cue will submit the necessary Trick Dog Performance Title paperwork and video to the Trick Dog Trainer’s Association on your behalf. Once the title is confirmed, you and your dog will be featured on the Dogs on Cue web site!
